While a complete Energy Audit isn’t necessary for us to determine where and how much insulation your home needs, it will provide you with a lot of valuable information beyond the services we provide. If you are interested in a complete formal audit we can arrange to have it done in conjunction with our services. If you have a Full Energy Audit performed you can qualify for up to $1,500 in rebates from DTE.
FREE INSULATION CONSULTATION
If you contract with us for insulation work we will do an informal consultation as part our service. We will look for problem areas beyond the services we offer and make suggestions. Most energy loss details can be pretty obvious and many you can fix yourself or hire a handyman to do the work.
Energy Use Improvements We Might Suggest
- Install Tripolymer® foam in exterior wall cavities – achieve R-15+
- Install Tripolymer® foam in basement block walls – achieve R-15+
- Insulate joist bond areas in basement – achieve R-15+
- Add 10" cellulose blown-in insulation to attic – achieve R-49 min. Includes sealing any openings from below, covering at risk light fixtures, insuring proper ventilation and installing baffle vents as required.
- Improve insulation and sealing on attic access panel.
- Insulate exposed heat runs in basement.
- Insulate hot water heater.
- Repair basement window.
- Repair three bedroom storm windows second floor.
- Repair casement window closing hardware in Den.
- Repair storm door bottom seals and closers.
- Repair weather stripping on older windows in family room.
- Repair threshold seals – front and back door.
- Repair caulking around windows and doors.
The energy audit involves the use of infra-red thermography and blower door technology to assess the movement of warm air towards cold and the over-all movement of air through the structure. It also includes inspection of all mechanical equipment. Air leakage can account for as much as 50% of building heat loss, sometimes more. We will learn where air infiltration is a problem, where the greatest heat loss areas are, and how much air the structure is allowing through. Follow up testing for quality purposes will give us a measure of what’s been achieved.
Blower Door Systems
Blower door tests involve installing the blower door equipment in a main entrance doorway and closing up the rest of the house as tightly as possible. We then measure total air movement through the structure. Areas of excessive air infiltration are easily identified. Older existing homes without insulation in the walls will leak like a sieve and the addition of Tripolymer®injection foam insulation makes a dramatic difference.
Infrared Thermography
An infra-red camera is used, generally from the inside of the house when there is a temperature differential of at least 20 degrees, to identify poorly insulated or water damaged areas. It is very accurate and gives a clear picture of what is going on behind the wall’s surface. We can also use the infra-red camera for quality control purposes when installing Tripolymer® foam in the walls.
